Sleep Study ...

Hello, I'm Karin. If your doctor suspects that you have a sleep disorder, you might be asked to go to have a sleep study done. When you have one of these tests, the technicians will take measurements of your brainwaves during your sleep and chart your sleep behavior. There are certain actions you need to take to get ready for a sleep study.

The first thing your doctor will have you do to prepare for a sleep study is to keep a diary of your sleep habits. You will usually be given a form to fill out for every day for the two weeks leading up to the sleep study. The form will ask about how long you slept each night, when you went to sleep, if there were any unusual stressors, and any incidents that you were aware of during your sleep.

For the two or three days prior to the sleep study, it is important to keep to your usual sleep habits. Your doctor will learn the most if you are neither more rested nor more tired during the sleep study than you are normally.
When you see the doctor to set up your sleep study, he will determine which medications, if any, you should discontinue on the night before the test. For example, if you are on any sedatives you will usually be asked not to take them as usual on that night.

You will also be advised of certain foods you should avoid on the night and day before the sleep study. Nothing with caffeine will be allowed. That means you should not have coffee, caffeinated soda, tea, chocolate, or energy drinks. Some doctors extend this period and say you should not have these foods for up to three days before the test.

Since your body will be hooked up to many wire leads for medical monitoring equipment, you will need to prepare your body for the sleep study. You will definitely want to be clean, but you have to avoid any sticky or oily grooming products.

Pack a bag with your normal sleepwear and anything that you regularly have in bed when you sleep, such as a special pillow. You are ready for your sleep study. All you have to do is to relax and let the sleep center technicians do their jobs. Soon you will have an accurate picture of what happens to you when you sleep.

Before the sleep study, patients may be required to maintain a sleep diary in which they record their sleep patterns. Some ways to prepare for the study are avoiding alcohol and caffeine and packing a bag with personal items needed for an overnight stay.

During the sleep study, electrodes and other sensors are usually placed on the scalp, sides of the head and under the chin, chest and legs. A sensor is typically placed under the nose and mouth and belts are placed around the chest and abdomen. A clip is placed on a finger.

Patients go to sleep and are monitored throughout the night by a technician and video cameras. After the study is completed, the results are tabulated and may be sent to the physician or other health professional who referred the patient to the sleep center.

A sleep study is a way of finding out exactly what is obstructing the flow of oxygen to the brain when you are sleeping. It is carried out by respiratory physiologists who carefully monitor your sleep patterns, limb movements and oxygen “saturation”, as well as your type of breathing.

The tests are complicated and can only be carried out when you are asleep. The results are analysed by a consultant in sleep medicine who determines whether surgery or another type of medical help is required, or if a change in lifestyle is necessary.

The sleep disorder service is provided by specialists in sleep medicine, respiratory medicine, physiotherapy, dietetics, and head and neck surgery to ensure that all patients are afforded care by the appropriate clinician.

It is essential that one parent or carer can come with your child for the sleep study and stay overnight. The parent/carer is responsible for your child's care throughout the hospital visit. Due to lack of space.

A sleep study can give you a positive diagnosis of sleep apnea. This is important because if sleep apnea is not diagnosed and treated, it can interfere with your quality of life. If you have sleep apnea, you may be at risk for excessive daytime sleepiness and complications such as high blood pressure, high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension), depression, irregular heart rhythms, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and stroke.

Depends on the diagnosis. Most people have a combination of up to 88 different sleep disorders as defined by the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) Manual. That is why a full sleep study is so important.

For example, if the sleep study indicates you stop breathing more than 15 times per hour, you have moderately severe sleep apnoea and probably should start using CPAP immediately. After your sleep study is completed, the technologist monitoring your study can answer some of your questions. However, only your health care provider can give detailed information about your study and explain the results. Your study will be thoroughly reviewed and interpreted by one of our sleep specialists. Your health care provider should have a detailed report of your sleep study within 2 weeks of the test date. They will also be able to discuss your treatment options.
